LANSING, Iowa —
On Monday, the Black Hawk Bridge connecting Lansing, Iowa, and Crawford County, Wisconsin, will close permanently as the Iowa Department of Transportation prepares to demolish it.
A new, taller and wider bridge will be built in its place, with the DOT hoping to have it open by 2027.
In the meantime, the nearest bridge is about 30 miles south in Marquette.
The Iowa DOT is working to get a ferry service up and running by early November, which will operate between 5:30 a.m. and 9 p.m.
The DOT is encouraging people to carpool if possible, as the ferry will be able to transport about 780 cars per day, down from the average 2,200 that cross the bridge.
