Opening statements begin in trial of man accused of driving drunk into crowd on Fourth of July in the Lower East Side

NEW YORK -- Opening statements will begin Monday morning in the second degree murder trial of Daniel Hyden.

Hyden is accused of driving into a crowd people celebrating July 4th 2024 in a Lower East Side park, killing four and injuring seven .

He has been charged with second degree murder with depraved indifference to human life.

After opening statements, the first three witnesses are expected to be mothers of the victims, likely of those killed.

The bench trial is expected to take about two weeks.
