The head of recruitment at a football club has become a key role over recent years with the ever increasing importance of transfer window activity.

You can certainly argue that one of the main reasons for Plymouth Argyle's struggles, first in the extremely competitive Championship and now in the still demanding League One at the start of this season, is that their signings have not contributed enough.

Take this summer, for example. It felt to many as though there was too much emphasis on younger players with potential for development and not enough on players proven at the level, and there needed to be a better balance with that.
