ATHENS, Pa. (WETM) — Oct. 20 through Oct. 24 is National Bus Safety Week, and Athens School District officials said since the start of the new school year, there have been more than 20 vehicles passing by school buses while the flashing lights are on.

On roads that are not separated by a physical barrier, traffic in all directions must stop at least 10 feet away from the bus, and must wait until the bus no longer has flashing lights. If there is a physical barrier, traffic moving in the same direction as the bus must stop, but traffic moving in the opposite direction does not stop.

All intersections require all traffic to stop and wait until the school bus deactivates its flashing lights.
