LUBBOCK, Texas — With the stakes too high and the fines higher, Texas Tech Athletics is asking students and fans to toss what's become a popular-but-controversial football game day activity.
On Monday, TTU Athletics Director Kirby Hocutt announced that the univeristy would no longer support or allow the tossing of toritillas during the game — even at the game kickoff — in Jones AT&T Stadium.
For context, prior to the 2025 season, the Big 12 ADs took a vote to ban objects being thrown on the field — with many arguing the ban and the penalties with it were targeted towards TTU's tortilla tradition.
And just recently, Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark announced a $100,000 fine will be imposed on the university, on top of the 15-yard penalty, for each time the rule is broken moving forward.
