On Oct. 7, the University of Michigan Medical School announced a $16.5 million National Institutes of Health grant to the Department of Anesthesiology for a planned project titled INTERACT to advance personalized treatment for chronic lower back pain. The $16.5 million grant will cover all medical expenses accompanying the trial, including funding for researchers, therapists and all interventions or treatments. The project’s goal is to match patients with treatments based on their medical history, life experiences and tests, thereby eliminating the trial-and-error process that often accompanies similar treatments.
