TOLEDO, Ohio — A south Toledo school is taking a closer look at how to get more students in class and reading at grade level.

State report cards show there is serious improvement needed at Marshall STEMM Academy, where both attendance and early literacy scores rank among the lowest in the Toledo Public Schools district.

To address the problem, school leaders invited parents to a community meeting Monday night at the South Branch Library, but only two parents showed up.

Principal Shani Mixon led part of what the school called its first “Power Hour,” aimed at discussing solutions and ways to boost attendance and reading.

“We’re going to talk to them like it’s 500 people in the room, even if it’s only three families,” Mixon said.
