MOUNT WASHINGTON, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A grand theft auto suspect exited a cargo van on the 110 Freeway and was struck by a passing vehicle Monday night after a police chase ended in Mount Washington, prompting authorities to shut down all lanes on the freeway in both directions for several hours.

The incident occurred shortly before 9 p.m. when the driver slowed the van to a crawl in a northbound lane near East Avenue 43 and climbed through the driver side window, landing on the freeway's center median.

The driver rolled off the median and onto the southbound side of the freeway, where he was immediately struck by a vehicle.

Police and firefighters quickly arrived at the crash site, and paramedics were seen administering CPR to the suspect, who was lying in a center lane.
