Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott has praised the Prime Minister’s first official meeting with US President Donald Trump as a diplomatic success that delivered tangible results for Australia.
Speaking to Sky News Australia at a Sydney book signing for his new release Australia: A History, Mr Abbott said the meeting between the two leaders had gone better than many had expected, highlighting Trump’s endorsement of AUKUS and the absence of new trade penalties as major wins.
“It was a good day for Australia,” Mr Abbott said.
“The meeting went much better than it might have. The fact that we haven't had additional tariffs, the fact that we've got clear presidential support for AUKUS, I think is a pretty good outcome.”
