Today marks one year since the start of the Hawthorne Fire in Berlin and Meriden that burned several acres and claimed the life of a firefighter, Robert Sharkevich Sr.

Firefighters from across the state, other states and Canada as well as the Connecticut National Guard worked together for weeks to extinguish the blaze.

The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection called it one of the most devastating wildfire seasons in Connecticut’s recent history.
