A U.S. Marshal and a suspect were shot and wounded Tuesday during a federal law enforcement operation in South Los Angeles.

The shooting was reported about 8:50 a.m. in the 400 block of East 20th Street, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Public Affairs Officer Luis Alanis.

According to broadcast reports from the scene, the gunfire erupted as a warrant was being served by ICE, possibly targeting a known gang member.

Both the suspect and the marshal were taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, according to the Los Angeles Times, which reported that the federal agent sustained a hand wound.
