The second time wasn't the charm for a 43-year-old Virginia man who is behind bars after breaking into a home and assaulting a homeowner, police say.

Manassas resident Allen Colbert Jr. is facing charges after being apprehended following an attempted burglary, and then a botched one, according to the Spotsylvania Sheriff's Office.

Deputies were called at around 9:15 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 19, to the 9100 block of Wood Creek Circle, where a resident reported that a man had just broken into his home and assaulted him.

Investigators say the victim fought off the suspect — later identified as Colbert — and suffered no serious injuries.

Colbert fled the scene on foot but didn’t get far.

Deputies quickly flooded the area and found him nearby, matching the description given by the victim.

Colbert’s vehicle was also located close to the home.

A search of the car turned up narcotics consistent with his “erratic behavior at the time of the incident,” the sheriff's office said.

Further investigation found that Colbert had also tried to break into another home in the neighborhood before the assault.

Colbert was arrested and charged with:

  • Burglary with intent to commit assault and battery;
  • Attempted breaking and entering;
  • Possession of Schedule I/II narcotics;
  • Assault and battery.

Colbert is being held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.

“The Sheriff’s Office is deeply saddened that anyone in our community was victimized in their home, the very place they should feel most secure,” officials said.

“We remain fully committed to identifying and arresting those responsible for crimes that threaten the safety and peace of our residents, particularly within their homes.”
