SUMMERFIELD, Fla. (WCJB) — Marion County commissioners approved a unique pet cemetery project in Summerfield along Highway 301, with specific conditions for the 4.4-acre development.

The cemetery will serve all kinds of animals, but pets must be cremated before burial. Owners of the Lawrence Nikola Junior Family Trust say they moved from Sumter County to Marion County and frequently passed the property.

After acquiring the land, they decided that creating a pet cemetery was a good idea due to the importance of pets to people.

County commissioners discussed concerns about connecting the property to water and sewage lines. The connection would cost owners an additional $100,000. Instead, they agreed to allow a private septic system to serve the one office and bathroom on site.
