The Santa Ynez football team is in the running for its first league championship in memory for the program.

In fact, the Pirates are ahead of the pack in the Sunset League. To stay there, they will need to win at defending league champion San Luis Obispo Friday night.

After finishing 1-3 in the Sunset League last year, the Pirates have already eclipsed their league wins total from last year. Santa Ynez (6-2, 2-0) will go against the Tigers (4-4, 1-1) Friday at 7 p.m.

Judging by the scores from last week at least, Santa Ynez's momentum going into this one could not be much better, and San Luis Obispo's could not be much worse. Santa Ynez racked up a 51-0 shutout at Pioneer Valley last week. San Luis Obispo took a shellacking at Ocean League rival Templeton and lost 48-7.
