JACKSONVILLE, Fla. ( WSFA ) - Winn-Dixie, once a staple grocery chain in the South, will no longer operate in most southern states.

Its parent company, Southeastern Grocers, LLC., announced Tuesday that it will close nearly all of its remaining Winn-Dixie locations beyond Florida and south Georgia in the coming months.

“In service of its strategic refocus to fuel long-term growth, SEG has made the difficult decision to transition ownership of most of its locations outside of Florida,” a corporate announcement read. “While this change enables the grocer to reinvest in the communities where its roots run deepest, it also marks the end of an important chapter in regions that have supported Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets for generations.”
