Before voting yes on the three appealing sales tax increases, please consider their unintended consequences, especially the effect on local businesses.

Raising our already steep sales taxes could be the straw that breaks the camel’s back — for both locals deciding where to shop and visitors deciding whether to vacation here. I own a local retail store, and I can tell you from the front lines that both locals and tourists are not happy with our already sky-high sales tax rates.

The tax increases are represented by three ballot items: the city of Aspen’s 2A (to raise sales taxes to help the school district), the regional item 7A (to create and fund a child care special district) and the Aspen Fire Protection District’s 6A (to raise money for the fire district).
