NEW ALBANY, Ohio — The New Albany City Council voted Tuesday night to approve new restrictions on electric bikes and scooters — but not without pushback from young riders.
The unanimous vote comes after what Mayor Sloan Spalding called “an explosion of e-bikes over the last six months.”
The new rules include a 10-mph speed limit on shared-use paths, unless otherwise posted, and prohibit the use of motors on sidewalks.
“You have to pedal, you might have to push, but you shouldn't hit that button to just use the motor,” Spalding explained to 10TV.
The changes also require anyone under 18 to wear a helmet, mandate lights and reflectors before dawn and after dusk and set clear classifications for different types of e-bikes.
