The city of Haverhill, Massachusetts, has officially appointed a new acting police chief amid weeks of turmoil.

At the first city council meeting since Chief Robert Pistone resigned from the Haverhill Police Department — with his immediate replacement being placed on leave a day later — the mayor introduced Capt. Wayne Tracy as the department's acting leader.

Tracy received praise from city councilors at the meeting and, later, a round of applause from officers in the hallway.

"I feel pretty good, mainly because of the support of everybody," he said. The Haverhill Police Department has had three police chiefs in a matter of three days.
