ORO VALLEY, Ariz. (13 News) - The Oro Valley Police Department Citizen Academy entered its eighth week of training.

The course allows regular citizens to learn about the town’s police operations.

On Tuesday, the class showed its 23 students a mock traffic stop with officers deploying K9 units while drone operators provided an eagle-eye view from above.

They finished with a demonstration with simulated munitions.

OVPD spokesman Darren Wright said the slogan of the academy is “understanding through education,” and through the classes, they hope to clear up any suspicions and misconceptions citizens may have.

“We want them to understand the department, and appreciate what’s actually being done,” Wright said. “And maybe not listen to some of the rumors of inaccuracies.”
