TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) - Tucson is preparing to declare a housing and homelessness emergency as the city's housing needs continue to rise. The Tucson City Council is asking city staff to prepare a draft declaration.

Median rents in Tucson climbed by more than 66% from 2017 to 2024, according to the city’s 2024 “People, Communities, and Homes Investment Plan.” Median home prices saw a more than 86% increase during that same time.

Vice Mayor Lane Santa Cruz emphasized the need for making it easier for entities outside the city to help with the crisis.
