TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) - The Tucson City Council has approved the demolition of a historic downtown building to make way for the expansion of the Fox Theatre into a performing arts center.
The building, located at 27 North Stone Avenue, is known as the Bank of America Plaza and is part of the Downtown Tucson Historic District.
Mayor Regina Romero shared her thoughts on the decision-making process, saying that she grappled with the decision, but ultimately voted in favor because demolition plans ensure it will be done carefully and well documented.
Plans are in place to open the new performing arts center in 2030, coinciding with the 100th birthday of the Fox Theatre, according to the company's website.
The project is estimated to cost $26.4 million.
