YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — As Northeast Ohio continues to mourn the loss of fallen Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper Nicholas Cayton , family, friends and law enforcement gathered Wednesday for a Celebration of Life service honoring his memory and service.

The ceremony took place at Youngstown State University’s Beeghly Center, where colleagues and state leaders reflected on Cayton’s courage and dedication.

Cayton, 40, was killed in the line of duty on Oct. 16 after his cruiser was struck while he was assisting a disabled semi-truck on Route 11 in Mahoning County, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Among those attending Wednesday’s service were Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and First Lady Fran DeWine.
