NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Crews in Norfolk have begun demolishing a walkway at Ocean View Beach Park, which was constructed in May, due to severe beach erosion.

The walkway, part of a $2.5 million expansion project at the park, was intended to provide emergency access to the beach. However, recent storms and Nor'easters have eroded over 30 feet of the beach, leaving the end of the ramp nearly underwater at high tide.

The walkway itself costed $430,000 and was designed to facilitate better access for emergency crews. However, the erosion has turned it into an obstacle rather than an aid, prompting the city to decide on its removal.

While the walkway is being dismantled, a stairway section will remain to provide access to the beach. Currently, there are no plans to reconstruct the walkway.
