NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) - Earlier this month we received the latest Winter Outlook by the National Weather Service where southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi is predicted to have “above” seasonal temperatures and “below” seasonal precipitation for Winter 2025-2026.

The NWS says that winter weather is influenced by both El Niño and La Niña so let's explore exactly what those mean in this week's “WEATHER WEDNESDAY”...

First let's touch briefly on the trade winds because they are especially important to both El Niño and La Niña.

According to NOAA, the "trade winds are winds that reliably blow east to west just north and south of the equator. The winds help ships travel west, and they can also steer storms such as hurricanes, too."
