NEWARK - The historic Stanley Theater, which used to house the Newark Gospel Tabernacle, will be turned into a mixed-use residential building but will keep its signature Spanish colonial revival-style façade.

The Newark Central Planning Board approved an application to demolish the Stanley Theater, turning it into a five-story mixed-use building with 14 residential units, and build nine, four-family dwellings adjacent to the property on Monday night.

Board Chair Wayne Richardson, Board Vice Chair Kalenah Witcher, and board members Juanita Jordan, Louise Scott-Rountree, Leon Purdie and Susan Austin OK’d the project. Board member Fausto Baez abstained.
