PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- Portland area trees are starting to peak as fall foliage braces for gusty winds and heavy rain this weekend.

Western Oregon and southwest Washington trees typically hit peak fall foliage during this final week of October. This year, soaking rains and gusty winds could bring some of those trees' levels that are starting to turn down prematurely.

Many area trees have already started to give off vibrant colors of yellow, red, and orange. Now, those leaves have to face gusty winds and heavy rain. Portland area wind gusts could reach 35-50 mph on Friday afternoon and again on Saturday. The strongest of the winds are expected to blow from the south on Saturday afternoon. Coastal areas could see wind gusts greater than 50 mph.
