PAINESVILLE TOWNSHIP, Ohio — Operations at the Lake County Solid Waste Facility are moving at a crawl after more than 8.5 inches of rain flooded low-lying areas of the landfill, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday morning.

The facility has been inundated since about 8 p.m. Wednesday, creating standing water and stalling traffic throughout the site.

Most vehicle movement “is slow at best and stopped for the most part,” Sheriff Frank Leonbruno said.

Officials warned that long lines and delays are expected through at least Friday as crews work to recover from the flooding. Any additional rainfall could worsen conditions and extend backups, the sheriff said.

Residents and haulers planning drop-offs at the landfill are urged to expect significant wait times or consider delay
