AURORA, Ohio — Groundbreaking for the future Aurora Park at Geauga Lake at the former site of SeaWorld Ohio took place on Thursday afternoon.
"This is a big day for all of us who have labored since 2014 to bring something awesome to this beautiful site," said Aurora Mayor Ann Womer Benjamin.
The city plans to turn the 47 acres of lakefront property into a public park that will include a beach, swimming pool, non-motorized boating, and other recreational attractions, "providing a vibrant destination for residents and visitors alike."
The first phase of the project, featuring the redevelopment of roughly 15 acres, is expected to include:
Renovation of existing gatehouses into open-air pavilions.
Renovation of existing pier and pavilion.
Installation of a kayak launch for rentals.
