MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Tennessee's House Democratic Caucus is requesting Gov. Bill Lee call an extraordinary session of the General Assembly to make sure families receive food aid during the federal government shutdown.

Several states, including Tennessee, have warned that if the shutdown continues, SNAP recipients will not receive benefits in November, which means nearly 700,000 Tennesseans could go hungry.

"While Washington, D.C. is broken and you may blame whoever you wish for the shutdown, we, as state leaders, have a duty to rise above partisan politics and serve those we represent," wrote state Rep. John Ray Clemmons (D-Davidson County) to Lee.
