Newark’s University Hospital is a 500-bed medical facility that is also ground zero for health care during a catastrophic event, an institution rich with history, and a testament to the state’s commitment to Newark, said elected officials and local stakeholders at a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday morning, in the first step of a multiphase redevelopment.
While University Hospital is New Jersey’s only public academic medical center and the only state-designated Level I Trauma Center for Northern New Jersey, it has been plagued with years of neglect and insufficient funding.
Now, officials from University Hospital, Rutgers Health and the state have broken ground on a much-anticipated renovation and a promising future of health care rooted in Newark.
