PORT NECHES, Texas — When Jessica Desormeaux learned that Port Neches Police Department K9 Officer Ruger didn’t have a bulletproof vest, she decided to do something about it.
“I think we kinda owe it to them to try to give back where we can,” Desormeaux said.
Last week, Desormeaux launched a fundraiser to help purchase the protective gear for Ruger, who serves alongside Sgt. Eric Heilman. She partnered with her friend Brittany Medley, owner of Southern Press Apparel, to sell custom T-shirts to raise the funds.
“Whenever I heard about Ruger not having a vest, it was definitely something I wanted to do for sure for them,” Medley said.
The shirts cost $30 each, and the total price of Ruger’s vest comes to about $3,800.
