The El Paso Fire Department has been awarded more than $4.4 million in federal funding to help pay for additional positions and upgrade emergency response capabilities.  The department received $4.26 million to fund 21 new entry-level firefighter positions from the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response, or SAFER, grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.  The SAFER grant will help the department meet National Fire Protection Association standards for emergency response times and staffing levels.
