British Columbia is set to initiate its own anti-tariff advertising campaign, even as Ontario has decided to pause its controversial ads. This decision follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s cancellation of trade negotiations with Canada.

B.C. Premier David Eby announced the campaign through a series of social media posts. He stated that the ads will target an American audience to clarify the implications of tariffs. “Americans need to hear how tariffs raise prices,” Eby wrote. He emphasized the need to defend B.C. and Canada’s forestry workers, noting that Canadian wood faces higher tariffs in the U.S. than wood from Russia. “Absurd. Truth will win!” he added.

Eby also highlighted the importance of reaching out to Americans who are planning home construction or renovations. He pointed out that their costs are increasing due to additional tariffs imposed by Trump on top of existing softwood duties. “We didn’t do it, so we shouldn’t wear it,” he remarked. The digital campaign is expected to launch next month.

This announcement comes just a day after Trump halted trade talks with Ottawa, which were affected by Ontario's ads criticizing his tariffs on Canadian goods. The Ontario government had aired an advertisement on American television featuring former President Ronald Reagan, who warned about the economic damage caused by tariffs.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford stated that he would pause the ad campaign on Monday to allow for the resumption of Canada-U.S. trade discussions. He made this decision after a conversation with Prime Minister Mark Carney, who is currently in Asia for summits where he is likely to meet with Trump. However, Ford indicated that the ads would continue to run through the weekend to reach a large American audience during the first two World Series games.

“Our intention was always to initiate a conversation about the kind of economy that Americans want to build and the impact of tariffs on workers and businesses,” Ford said on social media. He expressed satisfaction with the campaign's reach, stating, “We’ve achieved our goal, having reached U.S. audiences at the highest levels.”
