In the 2024-2025 tax year, the average council tax charge for a Band D property is £2,171 a year in England. This hefty cost can be cut down for people who are disabled, living alone or are otherwise considered ‘disregarded’.
It’s this last category that unpaid carers could fall under, entitling their household to a 25% or even 50% discount. This could add up to over £1,000 of savings each year for the average Band D home in England.
However, there are some criteria carers will need to meet first before claiming their entitlement. More information can be found on Gov.uk.
Your income and savings will not affect your eligibility for this discount. Similarly, you don’t need to be claiming Carer’s Allowance or Carer Support Payment to qualify.
