Sault College students are helping John Walsh stay right where he wants to be.

His east-end home.

“ I’m not leaving my house,” Walsh, 87, told The Sault Star. “They’ll bury me here. I’m not going into a home.”

He’s lived at his brick bungalow since 1965.

Seniors, such as Walsh, can tap the post-secondary institution’s Trades Day of Caring for help with winter preparation tasks such as storing hoses, turning off exterior faucets and sealing windows. Students supply the free labour for a program that’s been running for more than a decade.

This is the second year students have raked leaves at his property. The retired Mannesmann Tube Company worker is grateful for the assistance at the home he shares with his wife of 60-plus years, Marilyn.
