Air travel can be uncomfortable at the best of times, with a reclining seat frequently being the sole method to achieve comfort and prevent a tray table from pressing into your torso. However, for one carrier, that small comfort may now carry a cost after it revealed that reclining will be restricted exclusively to pricier premium seats.

Canadian carrier WestJet revealed the change as it undertakes a substantial "reconfiguration" of its Boeing 737 8 Max and 737-800 aircraft , which previously featured economy seating exclusively.

To experience a reclining seat on the updated aircraft, travellers will need to reserve a Premium or "Extended Comfort" seat, at an additional expense that could vary from approximately $50 to hundreds of dollars on lengthier journeys.
