A woman has tragically died after being struck in a hit and run incident early Sunday morning, police have confirmed. The pedestrian was hit by a car around 1.30am on Sunday, in the Neville's Cross area of Durham .

An extensive emergency response was launched with both the police and the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) attending the scene before the woman, who suffered head and chest injuries, was rushed to Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle. The road was closed for several hours while collision investigators worked at the scene but reopened around 7am.

It has now been confirmed that the 22-year-old victim passed away in hospital and her family have been informed. The car involved, believed to be a silver VW Golf, did not stop and was driven away post-crash.
