Built in 1813 by a local silk merchant, and situated on an infamous snaking road, The Cat & Fiddle, quickly became a refuge from the elements and a necessary pitstop for weary travellers between Macclesfield and Buxton.
Easily one of the north west's best-known pubs it stands 1,689ft above sea level on the Peak District moors and was one of the highest pubs in the region and the second highest in England.
The inn has played a part in many stories, some grisly , others less so, even becoming a stop-off point for Charles Rolls while road-testing new Rolls Royce car models.
Purchased by The Robinsons brewery in 1931, and still in its ownership today, it has stood the test of time despite the remoteness of its location.
