HILO (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Hawaii Island police officer suffered serious injuries after being hit while helping a stranded driver on Sunday.

The crash was reported Sunday morning at the intersection of Kekuanaoa Street and Kanoelehua Avenue in Hilo.

According to the Hawaii Police Department, officers responded shortly after 5:30 p.m. and determined that a white Subaru headed east on Kekuanaoa Street hit the on-duty officer who was helping a stalled vehicle in the west-bound left turn lane.

Police said the 27-year-old officer, a four-year veteran, sustained head injuries and rib fractures and was taken to the Hilo Benioff Medical Center, where she remains in guarded condition.

The driver of the vehicle, a 52-year-old Hilo man, was not injured.
