COLUMBIA, S.C. — A University of South Carolina student is recovering after being struck by a train near campus over the weekend.
Columbia Police said the incident happened Saturday afternoon along the 600 block of Blossom Street, under the Blossom Street Bridge between Pulaski and Gadsden streets.
According to a spokesperson with CSX, the student was hit around 12:15 p.m. by a CSX train. Officers say the student suffered multiple serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.
Federal statistics show that across the country, a person or vehicle is struck by a train every three hours , whether walking near the tracks or driving through a crossing. In 2024 alone, more than 2,200 people were hurt or killed in railroad crossing or trespassing incidents, many of which CSX officials
