South-east Queensland has sweltered through a day of extreme heat as firefighters battle more than 30 blazes across the region.

The smoke has also caused air quality levels in parts of the state to plummet to "poor" and "very poor", with Brisbane shrouded in it on Monday evening.

Burleigh Heads and Forest Lake recorded "poor" levels, while Southport and Parkwood were among several sites which dropped to "very poor".

Queensland State Fire Control Centre coordinator Brad Moore said fires burning at advice level on Monday evening were expected to continue to do so into Monday evening given the cool change was not forecast until later tonight.
