Ohio has more than 600 school districts, from the 73 kids who go to school on the Lake Erie island community of Put-in-Bay to the 46,000 students at the urban Columbus City Schools.
Cuyahoga County alone has 31 districts to cover our 57 municipalities and two townships.
Would it make more sense to combine them? To have fewer administrators, less overhead, one fleet of buses?
The Ohio School Boards Association argues that overhead would continue, even if districts merge. Districts say they already work together on payroll, purchasing, IT, energy costs and workers’ compensation.
Communities tend to have tight affinity for their own local schools and school boards.
