As Hurricane Melissa barrels towards Jamaica, NY1 spoke to New Yorkers at the Flatbush Central Caribbean Market who have family on the island.

Damian Meak, the owner of Yawdie-Q, a modern interpretation of a Jamaican restaurant with gourmet flavors, has a lot of family on the island.

“I myself have been in a hurricane, so you know what it's like. It is dangerous, even though it is quick, hopefully it's quick. It's just safety. Safety is really top of mind right now.”

Meak says he is trying to remain in close contact with his family back in Jamaica.

“We have a family Whatsapp chat group going, so we're in constant communication for as long as communication is going to be there. So hopefully we have communication all the way through, so we could just really check on our loved ones and ma
