Q: Despite being female and neutered, my dog constantly humps other dogs and even visitors’ legs. It’s so embarrassing. What can I do about it?

A: Dogs get up to all kinds of cringe-y nonsense: grazing on cat litter, dragging their butts on the floor, chewing on your favorite shoes and puking on the carpet. But perhaps the most humiliating of behaviors is humping. It’s even more embarrassing when you have a roomful of company and your beloved companion begins enthusiastically humping the chair, the cat or — perhaps worst of all — your boss’s leg. Our human minds instantly head to the gutter, reading the behavior as sexual. But it’s more complicated than that. Putting an end to your dog’s humping problem requires understanding why it occurs in the first place.
