A former high-ranking Warren police officer who retired from that job to take a position with another Macomb County law enforcement agency has resigned.

Charles Rushton quietly left the Clinton Township Police Department after only a few days on the job, according to department leaders. In September, he retired as deputy police commissioner after 25 years of service to the Warren Police Department.

“It was for personal reasons that had nothing to do with Clinton Township,” Rushton said Sunday in a text message.

Rushton was captain of the patrol bureau in Warren when he was appointed to the deputy commissioner role after former Warren Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer was fired by Mayor Lori Stone in March 2024. He retained that title until Eric Hawkins was hired as the department’s new com
