A baby found abandoned in a Longueuil bus shelter has died, local police confirmed on Monday.

The newborn wasn’t breathing when police arrived at the scene Monday morning, Longueuil police spokesperson Jacqueline Pierre said. After attempting resuscitation, first responders rushed the baby to hospital, she said, where the death was confirmed.

Police don’t yet know whether the baby was dead when left at the bus shelter on Chambly Rd. near Briggs St., Pierre said, nor do they know how much time passed before the baby’s discovery around 6:30 a.m. The newborn was less than 28 days old, she said.

An autopsy will likely be performed to determine the precise cause of death.
