Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai has recommended Justice Surya Kant as his successor at the Supreme Court.

CJI Gavai submitted his recommendation to the Ministry of Law on Monday, Oct 27.

CJI Gavai will demit the office on Nov 23, 2025 upon attaining the age of 65. And Justice Kant will take oath on Nov 24.

CJI Gavai's come after the government had sought his recommendation through a letter on Oct 23, and initiated the process to appoint the next Chief Justice.

Justice Kant is set to become the 53rd Chief Justice of India following the recommendation as he is the senior most judge in the Supreme Court after CJI Gavai.
