Hundreds of St. Paul residents were in temporary housing Monday, a day after a fire and utility outage forced the evacuation of the city’s Skyline Tower high-rise apartment building.

The Sunday morning fire at Skyline Tower — located along St. Anthony Avenue, on the north side of Interstate 94 — was reported just after midnight and quickly extinguished. No one was injured. But the city said it was quickly followed by the failure of an electrical system, which triggered the sprinkler system on three floors. That in turn caused a complete power outage.

“The outage disrupted potable water and heat, and disabled the fire suppression system, fire alarms, and all elevators,” the city said in a news release.
