ST PAUL, Minn. — As Election Day draws nearer, Twin Cities voters are getting ready to head back to the polls to evaluate what's working and what's not in their respective cities.

In St. Paul this cycle, residents can vote for their preferred candidate for mayor and, under Ballot Question 1, whether to give the city authority to issue civil fines for violations instead of just relying on criminal citations. The initiative has already been backed by both the City Council and Mayor Melvin Carter.

The ballot also asks for approval of a referendum proposed by St. Paul Public Schools.

Using a ranked choice system , voters can choose up to three candidates for mayor in order of preference, and vote "yes" or "no" on both the city and school district questions.
