ANN ARBOR – Defensive tackle Rayshaun Benny was a central figure in the Michigan and Michigan State rivalry even before he began his college career.

The former Oak Park standout was highly coveted by both schools during the recruiting process but initially sided with the Spartans, becoming their highest-rated commit when he announced his verbal pledge in November 2020.

But the former four-star recruit had a late change of heart, flipping to Michigan on signing day for the 2021 class.

Although he didn’t see the field against MSU during his freshman year in 2021, Benny said the loss to the Spartans in a top-10 matchup in East Lansing was excruciating.
